Media Kit: Overview

A Galaxy of Options
From astronaut encounters and fishing excursions to surfing the Atlantic and discovering nature, Florida’s Space Coast offers an array of diversions for vacationers. With 72 miles of Atlantic Coast beaches, the Space Coast provides accommodations to travelers at reasonable prices. In addition to sand and surf, the region features four protected wildlife refuges, the Brevard Zoo, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and picturesque golf courses. Located only 35 miles East of Orlando, Florida’s Space Coast is the perfect getaway for discovering and reconnecting with nature and relaxing on the sands.

Visitors can catch a glimpse of magnificent one-of-a-kind structures such as a 6.2 million pound space shuttle or interact with wildlife on serene nature tours. Rich with flourishing national and state parks, the Space Coast is ideal for exploration of Florida’s unspoiled ecosystems. With a vast variety of area parks, each location offers a chance to experience first-hand the unbridled beauty of Florida’s wildlife.

Explorers trek to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a 140,000-acre sanctuary packed with lush pine and oak hammocks and a shaded boardwalk where birding is at its best with wading birds, shorebirds and raptors. The Enchanted Forest, located in southern Titusville, offers a 400-acre sanctuary providing hiking trails for guests to explore and enjoy the area’s untainted views and perhaps spot a white-tailed deer or Florida bobcat. From sanctuaries to forests, the Space Coast guides adventurers along Canaveral National Seashore trimmed with 15-foot sand dunes and wind-swept sea oats.

Aside from close encounters with nature, a surfers’ haven awaits with the “perfect wave” in sight at Ron Jon Surf Shop, offering surf lessons to those looking to take on the swells at a beginners pace. Open 24 hours a day, same as the beach, Ron Jon Surf Shop features a waterfall, glass elevator and a huge selection of surfboards, bikinis and popular surf brand clothing, with the entire store encompassing more than 52,000 feet. In addition to more than 30 year-round events, Florida’s Space Coast is home of the annual Sebastian Inlet Pro Surf Competition, which attracts professional surfers like eight-time world champion, Kelly Slater.

Most famously known for its beaches, three of Space Coast’s beaches were declared as “Florida’s Ten Best Beaches,” by Southern Living. The quartz sand stretches for miles and attracts beach-goers year-round with gentle breezes, warm Southern waters and a comfortable average daytime temperature of 82° F. Located conveniently along Cocoa Beach, the historic Cocoa Beach Pier provides a break from the sun, the opportunity to catch “the big one” and spot a surfing competition, all while stretched out 800 feet over the ocean.

With more than 10 golf courses spanning Brevard County, visitors are sure to see more than just the greens and golf balls. Many of the area’s golf courses are designed by golf greats such as Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jan Stevens. Golfers can enjoy sights of shuttle launches or panoramic views of the Atlantic or catch a glimpse of indigenous wildlife surrounding the luscious greens.

After experiencing the Space Coast’s outdoor attractions, the technology of tomorrow awaits at the 50,000-acre megaplex of the Kennedy Space Center, which is actually housed within the 140,000-acre Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. It features the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, space shuttles, galactic spin-offs and a rocket garden complete with a special collection of aerospace originals. Nearby attractions worth the stop include the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, which showcases America's first galactic explorers; the B.C.C. Planetarium, acknowledged as “the Best in the World”; the U.S. Space Walk of Fame; and Camp KSC, a week long program at Kennedy Space Center designed to immerse youth in motion-based simulators, space mission training, interactive learning, space science and interaction with astronauts.

Visitors get back to basics at Main Street Titusville, (early1800s), Historic Cocoa Village, founded in the 1860s, the Eau Gallie Art District (early 1900s) and Downtown Melbourne (early 1900s). Quaint antique boutiques, alfresco cafes, old-fashioned theaters and art museums create the perfect downtown ambience for a relaxing shopping experience with an eclectic mix.

An added bonus for Space Coast visitors is unbelievably fresh seafood. From lobster and crawfish to stone crab claws and shrimp, all seafood fares leave guests salivating for more. Non-seafood eaters are never left out – from genuine Angus steaks and slow-cooked Southern barbeque to tempting mango pies and authentic astronaut ice cream – everyone is sure to walk away with a pleased palate.

For future “fish stories,” Florida’s Space Coast offers some of the best redfish and bass fishing in Florida. With more than 30 marinas, three fishing piers and numerous charter boats and fish camps, there’s no reason any fisherman will have to fib after casting a line at the Space Coast.

Accommodations at the Space Coast are modestly priced providing a relatively inexpensive beach vacation. Whether visitors are looking for beachfront locales or quaint inland havens, there are more than 9,500 rooms to choose from at popular hotels, family-friendly condominiums or romantic beachside cottages. To experience a more in-depth “lay of the land,” there are more than 2,800 RV campgrounds to call home for a few nights.

More than 275,000 square feet of meeting space offers the ideal coastal getaway for relaxing business excursions. The area provides access by air through Orlando International Airport and the Melbourne International Airport, serviced by Delta Airlines and Atlantic Southeast Airlines. Ground travel is easy along primary feeders: Interstate 95, U.S. 1, U.S. 192, S.R. 50, S.R. 46 and the Beach Line Expressway.
